Dialup 56k

This page shows installation procedures of VIF internet 56k Dialup service with various operating systems. Please refer to our local telephone numbers and choose the closest point of presence so that you don't encur any long distance charges.

Windows XP

  1. Click on START and then Control Options.
  2. Double click on Phone and Modem Options.
  3. Click on the Modem tab. Should no modem be listed then your computer does not have a modem properly installed. Please contact your computers and or modem manufacturer for support.
  4. Click on START and then Control Panel.
  5. Double click on Network Connections.
  6. Click on Create a new connection under Network Tasks.
  7. Select Connect to the Internet and then click Next.
  8. Select Set up my connection manually and then click Next.
  9. Select Connect using a dial-up modem and then click Next.
  10. Type VIF Internet as the ISP Name and then click Next.
  11. Enter one of our local dialup number and click Next.
  12. In the User name field enter your username.
  13. In the Password field enter your password.
  14. Enter your password again in the Confirm password field and click Next.
  15. Check the box next to Add a shortcut to this connection to my desktop and click Finish.
  16. Double click on the new VIF Internet shortcut on your desktop.
  17. Verify the information is correct and click on Dial.
  18. You should hear the modem dial and connect.
  19. If there are no errors while connecting the login box will drop down into the task bar.
  20. If you are prompted to re-enter your password, make sure the caps lock is off and make sure you entered the correct username, password and phone number.
  21. At this point you are now connected to the internet via VIF Internet. You can now open an internet browser such as Netscape or Internet Explorer.

Windows 2000

  1. Click the Start button to open the Start Menu, slide up to Settings and left-click on Control Panel.
  2. Double-click on the icon labeled Network and Dial-Up Connections.
  3. Double-click on the icon for your connection with VIF Internet.
  4. Left-click on the Properties button.
  5. In the field labeled Telephone Number, erase the existing number and type in the new number.
  6. Click OK and close the Dial-up Networking window.
  7. You're done!
  1. In your Windows Start Menu, go to Settings and select Network and Dial-Up Connections.
  2. Go to Network and Dial-Up Connections.
  3. Double-click on the Make New Connection icon located in this folder.
  4. Select Dial-Up to the Internet from the options presented to you in the wizard. Then, click Next.
  5. Choose to connect by using your phone line when prompted. Then, click Next.
  6. Connect using your phone line, for modem users
  7. Once inside the Internet Connection Wizard, enter the local access number you wish to dial into.
  8. When you're finished filling in this screen, click the Advanced button.
  9. Enter the dial-up number you're going to use and then click Advanced
  10. After clicking the Advanced button, an Advanced Connection Properties dialog will come up.
  11. On the Connection tab, ensure that PPP is selected, and that you put a check in the box that says Disable LCP Extensions.

  13. Select ISP automatically provides IP address and DNS server address.
  14. click OK to get back to the phone number box. Then, click Next.
  15. Enter the username and password you were assigned.
  16. You'll then be prompted to give this connection a name. Type in VIF Internet for the name of this connection.
  17. Save this configuration and complete the process by clicking the Finish button once you've Reached this Part.
  18. You'll notice a VIF Internet icon now appears in the Network and Dial-Up Connections folder. You can use this directly to get connected by double-clicking on it, or to make it easier, you can create a “shortcut” to it from your desktop. Here's how:
  19. Right-click on the icon to make a menu of options pop up. Select Create Shortcut from this menu. This will prompt you to let Windows know if you would like a shortcut placed on the desktop. When asked, click Yes.
  20. An icon, such as the one shown here will appear on your desktop. To connect to VIF Internet, just double-click on it.
  21. Once you open that shortcut from your desktop, you'll see this screen prompt you, verifying the number, and giving you the option to change properties, cancel, or dial right up. To connect, simply click Dial.
  22. Once this far, you can use any Internet application you like. For example, you might choose to go browsing on the Web using Internet Explorer or Netscape Navigator, or read your e-mail by using Outlook Express or Netscape Messenger.
  • Disconnecting from The Internet:

When you're done and would like to disconnect form VIF Internet, you can simply right-click on the Connection Status icon in your System Tray (the area with the small icons by your clock). When you do that, a menu will pop up allowing you to disconnect from right there.

Windows 95/98

  1. Double click on the My Computer icon on your desktop.
  2. Double click on Dial-up Networking.
  3. Double click Make New Connection
  4. Enter VIF Internet in the name field then click Next
  5. Type in a VIF Internet local access number then click Next
  6. After the setup wizard has completed it will create a VIF Internet icon. Highlight the VIF Internet icon, click FILE then PROPERTIES. Click the Server Types tab. Uncheck ‘Log On to the Network’.
  7. Click TCP/IP settings
  8. Click 'Server assigned name server addresses'.
  9. After clicking OK twice you will be put back into Dial-Up Networking.
  10. To connect, double click the VIF Internet Icon, enter your USERNAME and PASSWORD (in lowercase only), make sure SAVE PASSWORD IS CHECKED then click CONNECT.
  11. After a minute or two you will be connected to VIF Internet. Open your web browser Internet explorer, Netscape, etc…

Windows Millennium Edition (Windows ME)

  1. Click the Start button to open the Start Menu, slide up to Settings and left-click on Dial-Up Networking.
  2. Left-click once on the icon for your connection with VIF Internet.
  3. Pull down the File menu and click on Properties.
  4. In the field labeled Telephone Number, erase the existing number and type in the new number.
  5. Click OK and close the Dial-up Networking window.
  6. You're done!

Windows NT 4.0

  1. With your computer turned on and all programs closed, double-click on the My Computer icon on your desktop.
  2. Double-click on Dial-up Networking.
  3. In the Phonebook Entry to Dial: field, ensure that your connection with VIF Internet is selected.
  4. Click on the More button and select Edit Entry and Modem Properties.
  5. In the field labeled Phone number:, erase the existing number and type in the new number.
  6. Click OK, then click Close and also close the My Computer window.
  7. You're done!

MacOS 9.0 and Remote Access

  1. Open the Apple menu by click on the Apple icon in the upper-left hand corner.
  2. Slide down to Control Panels and select Remote Access.
  3. In the field labeled Number:, erase the existing number and type in the new number.
  4. Close Remote Access and click Yes when you are prompted to save the changes.
  5. . You're done!

Macintosh Computers using FreePPP

  1. Open the Apple menu by click on the Apple icon in the upper-left hand corner.
  2. Slide down to Control Panels and select FreePPP Setup.
  3. If you do not see 3 or 4 tabs, including General and Accounts, click the arrow in the bottom-left corner to display these tabs.
  4. Click on the Accounts tab
  5. With your connection for VIF Internet selected, click the Edit button.
  6. If you have a Dialup tab, click it. If you do not have a Dialup tab, disregard this step.
  7. In the field labeled Phone Number, erase the existing number and type in the new number.
